Topic: Navigating Creditor Claims in Minnesota Probate

Handling creditor claims correctly is one of the most consequential and deadline-driven responsibilities in administering a Minnesota estate. This session will provide a practical understanding of the creditor claims process under Minnesota law, including notice requirements, claims deadlines, priority of payment, and dispute resolution. The program will also address special claim types such as Medical Assistance recovery claims, secured versus unsecured creditor treatment, and common pitfalls that expose a personal representative to personal liability.

Speaker: Spencer Riegelman

Spencer Riegelman is an associate attorney in the Private Wealth Planning group at Best & Flanagan, where he focuses on estate planning, probate and trust administration, guardianship and conservatorship matters, and trust and estate litigation. Spencer contributes to editing the creditor claims chapter of the Minnesota Estate Administration Deskbook and has co-presented on creditor claims in Minnesota probate. He draws on his experience as a judicial law clerk for the presiding judge of Hennepin County Probate/Mental Health Court, as well as his work as a law clerk for the Legislation Committee of the Probate & Trust Law Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association, to serve as a trusted advisor and advocate for clients navigating trust and estate administration.
